WHO Collaborating Centre for Development of Midwifery Services and Education

The Nurse-Midwifery Education Program (NMEP), School of Public Health Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico received its designation as a WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre February 12, 2007 - February 12, 2011.

The overall purpose of the designation is to collaborate with WHO/PAHO in the development of midwifery services and education to contribute to the prevention and reduction of maternal and infant mortality/morbidity in priority Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries.

The Centre is a member of the Pan American Network of Nursing and Midwifery Collaborating Centers (PANMCC) and the Global Network  of WHO Collaborating Centers for Nursing and Midwifery

The terms of reference are:

  1. To provide consultation, support and networking for the development, implementation, evaluation of Midwifery Education Programs.
  2. To promote, support and implement PAHO Safe Motherhood efforts in the LAC region through development of quality midwifery care and services.
  3. To support the development of instruments, guidelines and methodologies to improve the quality of midwifery services in the region.
