Dr. José A. Capriles is at present the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico, and Program Director of the Master in Health Services Administration Graduate Program. Dr. Capriles was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He studied natural sciences at the University of Puerto Rico where he obtained a BS, Major in Biology, Magna Cum Laude. In 1981 he graduates as Doctor of Medicine from the UPR School of Medicine. After this degree, he completed his residency in Pediatrics and Sub-specialty in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine from the San Juan City Hospital Accredited Program in 1984 and 1986 respectively He has received several degrees from the UPR Graduate School of Public Health such as Master in Public Health – Maternal and Child Concentration (1992), Graduate Certificate in Developmental Disabilities and Early Intervention (1995), and Master in Health Services Administration (2001), with 4.00 GPA, Graduate Certificate in Gerontology (2015), with 4.0 GPA; and Recognition for his Academic Excellence and Leadership. Dr. Capriles has undergone several postdoctoral fellowships at New York University in the areas of Business Education, Ethics, Interprofessional Education, and Online Course Development.

Currently, Dr. Capriles is also the Principal Investigator of the PR Local Performance Site, Region 2 Public Health Training Center, HRSA funded Project. Dr. Capriles has been actively involved in accreditation processes for CEPH, CAHME, ACNW, ACGME, and MSCHE. Lately, has been actively involved as member in ASPH MPH and DrPH Competency Model Projects. Dr. Capriles last contribution in the field of graduate education has been the planning and development of a DrPH Program with Specialty in Health System Analysis and Management for the University of Puerto Rico, and DrPH Program with Specialty in Social Determinants of Health. Dr. Capriles is at present an active member of the Standard Council at the Board of Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). Dr. Capriles also leads the Office for Accreditation and Certification of the MSC and Chairs the Office for Academic Development of the MSC.
